Early Government Career
Appointed by Edward Heath, Margaret became Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1970. This role is the chief of education in England. In 1975, Margaret ran for Conservative Party Leader and won the election against Edward Heath. Margaret became the first women in the Leader of Opposition position. The leader of opposition leads the second-largest political party.

Prime Minister 1979-1983
Margaret Thatcher was elected for Prime Minister in 1979. She reduced state regulations, reversed high unemployment, and she helped control strikes during the Winter of Discontent. This was a time period when people demanded to have higher pay. Margaret Thatcher was not very popular at the beginning of her election, but she was re-elected because of the way she handled the Falkland War in 1982.

The Falkland War
The Falkland war lasted ten weeks, and was between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The war was over two British territories, The Falkland Islands, and the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands. It started on April 2nd, 1982. Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands. The British government sent Navy and Air Force to combat the Argentine government. The total amount of days of the war, were 74 days. 255 British men and women died, and 649 Argentine men and women died. The British won on June 14th, 1982, when Argentina surrendered.

Prime Minister 1983-1987
Margaret Thatcher’s second term as Prime Minister was just as difficult as the first term. the strikes continued, and one strike lasted a full year. In October of 1984, Brighton was bombed by the Irish Republican Army. Her hotel was bombed during the Conservative Party conference. In January 1986, Michael Heseltine resigned. He was the Defence Minister, and Margaret Thatcher was confused as to why he decide to leave her Conservative Party. After this, she needed more popularity if she wanted to be elected for the third term. Margaret decided to make slight changes in the economy of England, and many people were happy with her decision. During this time, Margaret became very close friends with President Ronald Reagan.

Prime Minister 1987-1990
In her third term, there were huge arguments between Margaret and her co-workers about the European Community, which the United Kingdom joined in 1973. The Cold War ended and the rest of Europe started having different opinions on a lot of different topics. A man named Sir Geoffrey Howe made a speech about how Margaret Thatcher needed to resign. There was a vote, and Margaret Thatcher won, but they needed a second vote to continue on. Many of her co-workers decided to leave her side, and she had no choice but to resign. She left the office on November 28th, 1990. John Major took her place as Prime Minister.
